China Cracksdown on Websites; Shuts Plenty 1

China has cracked down on websites and more than 4,000 of such online entities have been shut down which contain harmful information especially pornography.

It is part of a three-month nationwide clean-up campaign and jointly launched by the State Administration of Press and Publication and National Office Against Pornography and Illegal Publications.

The campaign was launched in May this year and by August-end more than 120 relevant violations were amended and 230 enterprises were ordered to rectify regularities.

It targeted content in online novels responsible for spreading improper values, obscenity, vulgarity and copyright infringement.

It is learned the crackdown will further intensify in future to keep the online literature environment clean and healthy.

The government had also banned about 22,000 pornographic websites earlier this year.

A statement released by the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications said until now more than 1.75 million items have been deleted in 390 cases.

China has extensive internet censorship in the world with a wide variety of laws and administrative regulations. Different methods are used in blocking websites and those include DNS poisoning too.

The government says it has the right to govern the internet inside its borders.

A report of BBC earlier revealed the censorship has benefited local Chinese businesses like Alibaba and Baidu.
