The K-pop girl band was named after the first initials of its three members – Sea, Eugene, and Shoo. It was not the first-ever female k-pop group to ever exist but was certainly the first one that got popular. It was formed in the 90s, and they dropped their first hit single “I’m Your Girl” in 1997.

The song became an instant hit and got massive attention in the male-dominated K-Pop industry. The band is known for paving the path for other K-pop girl groups.

Girls’ Generation

If you want to experience an effervescent, softer, and sweet side of K-Pop then “Girls’ Generation” is the best female K-Pop group to start with. They dropped with first-ever hit “Into the New World” in August 2007, but it was not until they released “Gee” in 2009 that they achieved their vast fanbase.

The music video for this song also garnered over 100 million views on YouTube, becoming the first-ever K-Pop girl band to do so. Other memorable songs by the band include “Run Devil Run’’, “Oh!”, and “Tell Me Your Wish.”

Fin.K.L

The biggest competition faced by the SES was from Fin.K.L. The band’s name stands for Fin Killing Liberty that means the band is against the oppression of freedom. This band was one of the most famous k-pop female bands selling more than 2.2 million albums and winning several music awards.

They became famous for mixing different genres, from dance tune “Eternal Love” to a radio hit “Now” to R’n’B ballad “Blue Rain.” The band split up in 2002, but all the members have continued their solo journey.

Wonder Girls

When we talk about some of the first K-Pop bands that introduced K-Pop in the US, “Wonder Girls” definitely make the list. They were the first K-Pop Band to have charted their songs at the Billboard Hot 100.

Their hit single “Nobody” peaked at No. 76 on the chart. They have since shifted their focus from Korea to the US in order to capitalize on their global success. Their most popular hits include “I Feel You,” “Nobody,” and “So Hot.” Unfortunately, they have not released any news album since February 2013.

After School

This is the only K-Pop band that has an actual admission and graduation concepts, thus the name. They released their debut single “Because of You” in January 2009 and saw massive success in the form of no. 1 position in multiple charts.

In 2011, they released Japanese versions of their Korean hits like “Because of You,” “Shampoo,” “Diva,” and “Bang” and ranked in Japanese music charts.

2NE1

It is a K-Pop girl band that constitutes four talented South Korean women that broke the stereotype of girl groups only making bubble gum pop music. They came through with three different music genres: reggae, EDM, and heavy hip-hop.

Apart from the difference in music choices, bold fashion choices, and fierce attitudes of the women in 2NE1 also made them stand out. They also became the first girl K-Pop band to play at US solo shows.

Baby V.O.X

This band was formed back in late 1997 and became the face of K-Pop Dance groups back then. Even though the band doesn’t officially exist right now as they split up in 2006, regardless, they released a total of seven albums during the period, and not all but most of them saw success.

Their most successful album was their third album “Come Come Come Baby” which was released in 1999.

Brown Eyed Girls

Brown Eyed Girl, also known in short, BEG, is a four-member K-Pop Girl band that debuted in 2006 with their R&B/ballad single “Come Closer” and tried something new. They decided to not reveal their faces so that more attention would be on their vocals. This didn’t quite work, though.

They released their most successful single “Abracadabra” in 2009 that featured the famous dance that was enacted by PSY in the video for his song “Gentleman.”

Jewelry

This Korean girl group is known as the longest-running K-pop girl band. It was formed backed in 2001 and released music until its disbandment in 2015. This long musical journey of the group hasn’t been all smooth.

From changes in the lineup to other unfortunate setbacks, “Jewelry” faced them all and still stuck together. Their hit single “Superstar” designated their place in the culture, but the release of “One More Time” remains the fan-favorite.

Sistar

This is one of the newest female K-pop groups in this list and is the current largest digital-selling girl group in Korea. Since their formation in 2011, “Sistar” has dropped hits after hits.

They have become so popular that other groups are facing trouble in timing their releases in order to avoid competition with them. Their debut album “So Cool” was a massive commercial hit, and the single “So Cool” charted a Number 1 position on the Billboard Korea K-Pop Hot 100 chart.
