How did it all start?
Mangalore to Mumbai
Srinivas Kamath is a fruits merchant from Mangalore, Karnataka. Among the hundreds of fruits on the market, he is good at picking the ripest fruit. With this, he started a fruit business in Mangalore and raised his wife and seven children. However, due to the inadequacy of the fruit business, he moved his family to Mumbai. Thus Raghunandan Srinivas Kamath landed in Mumbai with his parents at the age of fifteen.
Convenience store‌
The family opened a grocery store in Mumbai to start a fruit business. Raghunandan’s mother tries to make delicious food to bring the customers closer to them. But that tasty food recipe was not so easily found. She kept trying, though. Accompanying her, Raghunandan used to spend most of his time in the kitchen. The shop‌ ran well with delicious recipes as a result of their effort. The family got good financial stability in no time. They also started selling ice creams there.
Own effort
Homemade vanilla and chocolate flavors were sold at an eatery shop in Mumbai. However, due to disagreements with his elder brother, he had had to leave the shop. The time has come for the newcomer to prove himself. With this, he thought of doing something that no one else could do.
Fruit Flavors
Until then, only vanilla, strawberry, and chocolate-flavored ice cream were sold. Raghunandan had an idea why not sell ice creams in mango, guava, and grape flavors. He mastered the skills he had learned from his father in finding the good fruits and the skills he had learned from his mother in making new recipes to make ice creams in fruit flavors.
First store
He set up the Naturals Ice Cream Store on Juhu Road in Mumbai in 1984 with just four tables. Until then, people who were obsessed with eating regular flavors loved these fruit flavors. He also opened another store in Villeparle the following year. Shortly thereafter, ice cream in Mumbai became known as Naturals.
Vivian Richards Favourite Ice Cream
The Sunny Days show was hosted in 1986 by legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar. Viv Richards, who came as a guest, said that when he comes to Mumbai, he would definitely eat ice creams in Naturals and that the taste found there could not be found anywhere else. This gave good publicity and marketing to Naturals Ice Cream.
Mouth talk
Raghunandan Kamath has not spent a single rupee on brand promotion since the start of Naturals’ journey. Customers tasted the ice cream there and advertised it. Vivian Richards and Amitabh Bachchan are a few of them who like naturals ice cream. With the help of word of mouth, the flavors of Naturals spread from Mumbai to all over the country.
Turnover of Rs 300 crore
Starting from a small roadside grocery store, Raghunandan Srinivas’ journey to Kamath costs Rs. 300 crore turnover. There are over 135 outlets in various cities across the country. Ice creams are available in almost all flavors, such as coconut, grapes, lychee, and guava.
